We see them everywhere – at events, in construction sites, around public gatherings, and more. But few of us actually know how the humble portable toilet works. The fact is, a lot of history and technology goes into every portable toilet you see. A combinations of innovative technology and careful maintenance contributes to the operation of all portable toilets. In celebration of these humble, but vitally important installations, we’ve put together this brief answer to the simple question: how do portable toilets work?

Portable toilets are comprised of four main components, which work together to dispose of waste

Before we go into the nitty gritty of portable toilet operation, let’s take a look at the main components. First, there’s the toilet seat – its function is pretty self explanatory. Then there’s the flushing mechanism and pressure system. These work to transport waste from the toilet into the final component: the holding tank. These main four sections of a portable toilet work to ensure that the toilet is a complete unit. When all four components work together, outside plumbing and connection is not necessary. Basically, it is these four mechanisms that ensure your portable toilet can travel anywhere – plumbing or not!

First, there’s the flushing mechanism of a portable toilet – here’s how it works

When a portable toilet flushes, it is aided by one of two things: water, or toilet chemicals. We’ll look at toilet chemicals later in this list. So let’s focus our attention on the water, and one main question that accompanies it: where does the water come from? Generally, if you have a water-flushing portable toilet, there will be a concealed water tank somewhere in the unit. This may be the same water tank that services that handwashing taps in the portable toilet. In some units, though, the flushing tank is separate.

Flushed waste is transported to a holding tank in the portable toilet, which works to contain waste

The holding tank is the key to the portable toilet, so, understandably, it has to be built tough. A leaky holding tank is enough to ruin any portable toilet – and probably the grass immediately surrounding it! That’s why portable toilets are usually built from a tough plastic compound, sometimes with aluminium holding tanks. Such construction ticks the two main boxes when it comes to portable toilets: durability, and weight. Portably toilet holding tanks only work if they’re both strong, and light. That’s why plastic and aluminium components are normally the pick of the bunch.

Portable toilets holding tanks combine waste and chemicals: chemicals work to control hygiene

A portable toilet holding tank doesn’t exactly sound pleasant – and it’s certainly not something you would want to see. But it is far better than you are probably imagining. And that’s thanks to the unsung hero of every portable toilet: the toilet chemical. Portable toilets are equipped with a chemical additive in their holding tanks. This additive is potent, and it serves to break down waste, mask odours, and kill bacteria. This treatment alleviates health concerns, and allows portable toilets to remain a hygienic solution to waste management issues. Thanks to portable toilet chemicals, your portable toilet can remain on site for longer, without any adverse effects.

Portable toilets can’t work without frequent expert servicing – here’s how that works!

Of course, portable toilets aren’t a permanent set and forget solution. They do require maintenance. That’s why a good portable toilet provider is essential. With a good portable toilet provider, you get the service you need, when and where you need it. That service includes deliver, maintenance, and removal. As a part of their regular maintenance, portable toilets require emptying, cleaning, and chemical or water refills. Luckily, all those tasks are ones happily completed by a good portable toilet provider. They really are the convenient waste management solution!

Electricity drives our lives. Whether you’re at home, at work, or out and about, electricity is a necessity. However, sometimes power simply isn’t available. That often occurs on job sites, where a new building isn’t connected to power yet. It can also occur at outdoor events, where there are no power sources nearby. Generally speaking, it can occur when you least expect it. So what can you do when electricity isn’t available? The obvious solution is battery power, or generators. But battery power doesn’t match 240v power, and generators are noisy, costly, and inconvenient. That leaves the best choice: temporary power pole hire. Here’s why.

Safety: temporary power pole hire delivers safe 240v electricity to your job site

Electricity presents a number of very well known hazards. If it’s set up in a way that’s not safe, electricity can have devastating consequences. That is certainly a concern when it comes to temporary power sources. What assurances do you have that a temporary power source is safe and professionally installed? With temporary power pole hire, you have the assurance of a licenced, and qualified electrician – as demanded by law. When you hire a temporary power pole, it’s installed and connected by a licenced and qualified expert. That expert can give you all the assurances to need to know that your power is safe.

Reliability: temporary power pole hire reduces your reliance on battery powered equipment

Battery powered equipment, and generator power are simply not as reliable as temporary power poles. Both generators and batteries are finite sources of power. Often, they run out of juice just when you need them most. If your battery runs out, that means either a long wait to charge it, or an expensive replacement. If your generator runs out of fuel, that means yet another trip to the service station to fill it. And in the meantime, your site or event is without power. With portable power pole hire, that won’t happen. You have reliable power, on demand.

Accessibility: temporary power pole will deliver electricity in some of the most inaccessible places

Whether you’re building on a site that’s a bit out of the way, or hosting a large event somewhere outdoors, electricity can be hard to come by. And a lot of the time, getting a heavy generator in is hard work. Sometimes, it’s just not feasible because of noise or emissions. However, getting a portable power pole into a site is an easy task. They’re easy to manoeuvre, unobtrusive, and easy for your electrician to set up!

Convenience: sometimes, battery power is insufficient, and that where power pole hire helps!

Even when you have a power source, it can sometimes be insufficient. That is a significant problem for tradespeople who use certain tools. A lot of industrial tools draw very large currents. In some cases, even household electrical systems aren’t up to the challenge. In those cases, you can face the frustration of tripping switches whenever you use a certain tool. That is often associated with the inconvenience of having to find a sturdier power supply. But that inconvenience is eliminated altogether by temporary power pole hire!

Staying up to code: temporary power pole hire meets all the safety regulations

On any building site, and at any event, there are strict safety regulations. These are in place to save lives, and they do every day. Whenever electricity is involved, safety must be the foremost priority. And a part of that is staying up to code. Complying with regulations can save hefty fines, and it can ultimately save lives. With temporary power poles, you get professional installation that meets all legal requirements. So that’s one less liability to worry about!

Porta potties are a very much overlooked utility in our community. So often, we simply don’t notice them; that is, until we need to! So in honour of our great mate the porta potty, let’s take a look at some of the more obscure porta potty facts we know.

Fact #1 The porta potty is among the most benign technology to emerge from World War II

When you think of wartime technology, your mind probably visits a few of the more sinister options. Bombs, weapons, vehicles, and tactics are what we normally associate with war technology. But there are plenty of less sinister things too, like the humble porta potty! Porta potties are actually a product of World War II technology, which sought to provide sanitation for the shipyards, which were understandably busy.

Fact #2 Evidence suggests that ancient Egyptian tombs were equipped with a porta potty – here’s why

It’s a pretty widely recognised fact that the porta potty as we know it emerged in the 1940s. However, there is some evidence to suggest that a certain variety of porta potty was invented long before that. Owing to the firm Egyptian belief in an afterlife, Egyptian tombs were often adorned with the necessities. These generally included all the items necessary to get through life after death. And it doesn’t get more necessary that a toilet!

Fact #3 To meet the need of some very discerning patrons, the luxury porta potty was invented!

It’s the case with every invention: someone has to create a luxury version! And porta potties are not immune from that phenomenon. Luxury porta potties, with marble benchtops and all sorts of luxury additions, are actually pretty common. We don’t mind the classic get-the-job-done version, though.

Fact #4 Research has indicated that the first porta potty in the row is the cleanest – who would have thought?

It’s a debate as old as public toilets themselves: which stall is the cleanest? Unsurprisingly, this debate extends to porta potties. But the answer may surprise you: it’s the first! People generally favour privacy, and so they go to the furthers porta potty from the queue.

Fact #5 Porta potties offer more than just convenience – they are also good for the environment

We all know they’re one of the most practical varieties of toilet. But what are the other benefits of a porta potty? Well, water conservation is one. Porta potties use far less water than conventional toilets, which makes them better for the environment.

Fact #6 Embalming chemicals such as formaldehyde were the first used to mask porta potty odour

The famous chemical you see in porta potties wasn’t always our sanitary saviour. Back when they were invented, porta potties were equipped with formaldehyde to mask the smell. Of course, research has since shown that formaldehyde is quite harmful, so that practice has ceased long ago.

Fact #7 The large industry built around the humble porta potty is still growing – here’s why

Like any industry, the porta potty industry is built around supply and demand. So if the industry is growing, so too must demand. But from where? Construction, of course! With so much development and construction going on at the moment, someone has to keep sanitation ahead of the curve. And that’s where we come into the picture.

Fact #8 You can use a porta potty for more than just big events – they’re also great for private parties

Porta potties aren’t only for concerts and construction. If you’re hosting a large number of guests and your facilities can’t cope with the numbers, why not supplement them with a porta potty? It will keep your bathroom clean, and your guests happy.

Fact #9 Porta potties haven’t always been so portable – here’s why!

Porta potties began as heavy constructions, made predominately from timber and metal. Emptying them was hard, and moving them was harder. Luckily, that’s no longer the case!

Fact #10 Thanks to their lightweight and durable design, you can get a porta potty just about anywhere

Today, the humble porta potty is made from a lightweight polymer. They’re easy to clean, and even easier to move. If you need one moved into place on your site – give us a call!

Sometimes, you stumble across a little gem of historical interest. And that’s exactly what we’ve found looking into the history of portable toilet designs! The concept seems simple: a toilet with its own holding tank, and a portable structure. But when you look at the circumstances under which the humble portable toilet actually came to be, you find a story of responsive design, and historical reflection. So let’s take a look at the ins and outs of portable toilet designs!

Portable toilets first found their design in the shipyards of World War II

Portable toilet design began in the 1940s as a response to the unique circumstances of World War II. To keep up with demand for ships, shipyards were working overtime and without proper facilities. And so the portable toilet was born! We don’t imagine it would’ve been particularly pretty, but it did the job. There was room for improvement though – the ‘portable’ aspect of those toilets was lacking a little. They were constructed from metal and timber, which made them incredibly heavy.

The portable toilet became the ‘Strongbox’ thirty years later, with a revolutionary new design

For thirty years, though, the shipwrights made do and the portable toilet spread – probably thanks to some very heavy lifting. Then, in the 70s, everything changed as fibreglass entered the scene: cue the ‘Strongbox.’ This was a cast fibreglass box with amenities inside. The beauty of this portable toilet design was its weight; it weighed much less than previous portable toilet designs. At around this time, thanks to its light weight, the portable toilet grew even more in popularity. It spread to the construction industry, and took root in many of the places we see it today.

But there was a problem: the 70s portable toilet design had little natural light or ventilation

With fibreglass, many thought the portable toilet design had reached its peak. But there were still problems. Perhaps the worst of these were the absence of light, and ventilation. In combination, these features made the humble portable toilet that little bit too humble. Basically, they were really unpleasant. The fibreglass often took on the odour of the toilet, and something needed to be done.

Plastics and polymers soon fixed that, with innovative new portable toilet designs

Enter plastics and polymers: the solution to portable toilet design issues. Plastics and polymers are even lighter than fibreglass. They also clean up a lot more effectively. But that’s not all that happened to portable toilet designs – they also received opaque ceilings and extra ventilation. The opaque plastic ceiling combined privacy and natural light. Natural light kept the newly designed portable toilet well lit, while the ventilation kept it as fresh as a daisy. It’s no surprise that these materials are still in use today. That is, until the next revolution in portable toilet design of course!

Today’s portable toilet designs are a result of clever thinking, and they’re the best yet!

Portable toilet designs continue to mould and adapt as technology enhances. Today, though, the changes are a little less obvious than they used to be. A lot of the more recent developments in portable toilet design have been all about improving mobility. Some such improvements include altering the shape of portable toilets to improve their tessellation. This allows them to stack neatly on trucks, so that transport is quicker and cheaper. Other notable recent improvements in portable toilet design include alterations to the chemical compound that treats their waste. These chemicals are improving quite regularly, and helping portable toilets really reach the next level of luxury. It’s quite amazing to see the portable toilet these days, when you know its humble beginnings in a New Jersey shipyard. But we’ve no doubt there’s more to come – so watch this space!

Construction sites: they are one of the most hazardous spaces to work in. But for so many Australians, construction sites are the daily norm. Hours upon hours are spent on construction sites across the country each day, and every one of those hours carries a different set of hazards. So make sure you and your team get home safely – learn about identifying hazards on a construction site. Because only when they are identified, can these hazards be addressed. Here are a few common hazards worth identifying on any construction site.

Physical hazards top the list of hazards on a construction site – here are some common examples

Physical hazards are the most obvious hazards on a construction site, but that doesn’t mean identifying them is always easy. Sometimes, these hazards are relatively subtle. They include, for example, noise, light, UV radiation and even air quality. A lot of these aren’t exactly visible, so identifying them requires an extra level of attention. If you are working with heavy machinery, make sure everyone is equipped with the right PPE gear. And always make sure there’s plenty of ventilation. If you’re exposed all day, make sure sunscreen is available. UV rays work slowly, but their future effects can be devastating. And, of course, don’t forget to look out for the more obvious hazards like traffic, heights, electrical hazards and so on. Always stay alert!

You should also work to identify chemical hazards on a construction site, including these

Chemical hazards can be devastating if they’re not identified and rectified quickly. Acidic and basic substances, gases, emissions and more are all present on a lot of construction sites. So how can you identify these hazards? Firstly, make sure all chemical agents are clearly labelled. Secondly, make sure none of their containers or tanks are in a compromised state. And thirdly, keep dust to a minimum where possible, and keep respirators close at all times! If in doubt, consult Work Safe for more information on common and uncommon chemical hazards.

Believe it or not, some construction sites have biological hazards – here’s what they look like

They may not be as common as some of the hazards we’ve listed so far, but biological hazards are a real threat! They take the form, more often than not, of mould, plants, and parasites. Generally, these types of hazards thrive below ground, in confined spaces where they can be inhaled. The best way to identify these hazards on a construction site is to rely on properly trained personnel to enter spaces in which such hazards are more likely to be. If there is anything suspicious, report it immediately and make sure the area in question is isolated from the other workers onsite.

Manual tasks and ergonomics are an often overlooked construction site hazard: here’s how to identify them

Construction and heavy lifting go hand in hand. That’s why one of the biggest hazards worth identifying on construction sites is ergonomics. Proper lifting technique is a must if your body is going to keep up with the demands of the job. So make sure everyone is educated in proper lifting, and supported by others when necessary.

Finally, don’t forget to look out for psychological hazards on the construction site and identify them quickly!

Finally, let’s look at the hardest hazards to identify on a construction site: mental health. It’s never easy to spot when a mate is doing it tough, but by keeping an eye out you can really make a difference.

A space on the guest list of any wedding is a coveted position. So you may not be too keen to give yours away to an old friend who you generally prefer to see in private. But, as with all wedding guest lists, there are one or two additions that simply must be made. And one of those is a portable toilet. It’s easy to get caught up in balloon arches, floral arrangements, seating plans and catering, but even the not-so-glamorous toilet needs a look in. And here’s why!

Having a home wedding? Portable toilet hire will keep the party outside

If you’re planning a home wedding, chances are you’ve got a pretty extensive outdoor setup. And you probably want to keep it that way. Having people gathering in your garden is one thing. But having them bring a little bit of the garden inside with them every time they go to the toilet is another entirely. By the end of the night it will be hard to distinguish your hallway from the flowerbed! Luckily, there’s one guest who you can trust to keep the party outdoors, and that’s a portable toilet. If people don’t need to go inside, chances are they won’t.

If your wedding is a little more off the grid, portable toilet hire is a must

If your wedding is further afield than the backyard or family farm, you may be lacking a toilet altogether. And if that’s the case, wedding toilet hire is probably at the top of your planning schedule. If it’s not, now’s the time to put it there! Mixing a generous combination of food and drink is a sure fire way to see the worth of wedding toilet hire. So make some arrangements now – we guarantee that it’ll be one of the easiest bookings you make.

Worried about spoiling the atmosphere? Wedding toilet hire is more discreet than you may think

We will be the first to admit that, despite their importance, portable toilets don’t exactly scream romance. If you’re worried that the toilets you hire for your wedding will bring down the ambience a little, that’s understandable. Luckily, it is easy to avoid though. Portable toilets earn their keep by being exactly that – portable! And that means they are quite small, very discreet, and easy to tuck away. Out of sight, out of mind ¬– at least, until you need them.

Portable toilets make the perfect guest at any wedding: you can control precisely where they stand!

To follow on from our last point, portable toilets are incredibly easy to position. With the help of your expert provider, you can arrange to have your portable toilet placed just about anywhere. Behind some bushes, under a tree, around the corner, or out the back: the choice is yours! If only it were that easy to manage the seating plan for all your other guests…

Get hitched without a hitch: invite portable toilets to your wedding – you won’t regret it!

Weddings are a logistical feat quite unlike any other. They combine planning, organisation, and foresight with more precision than almost any other event. Once you’ve put it all together, you have every right to take pride in your achievement. So don’t let the simple things spoil it! Get onto your portable toilet provider and organise wedding toilet hire. As they say, the devil is in the detail – you need to cover all the bases. And with some expert help from the portable toilet prodigies, you can ensure that your guests are all comfortable, happy, and exactly where you want them.

To organise your wedding toilet hire, get in touch!

Planning the guest list for your next big event always takes a bit of thought. But there’s one guest who should always stand atop the list of VIPs: the humble portable toilet! It might not be your first choice, but you have to admit that portable toilets can make or break any big event. If you’ve ever attended an event that was a little understocked in the portable toilet department, you’ll know that it can be a showstopper. There are many reasons why portable toilets for events are vital, but when it comes to the top points we reckon there are four that really stand out. And here they are!

Planning a big event at home? Portable toilets preserve your home by keeping the party outside!

Home weddings, large parties and neighbourhood events are all pretty common. And why wouldn’t they be! These events are great fun, and they are far more affordable than booking through venues. The extra money you save can even go towards adding a few extra names to the list! Among them: portable toilets. And here’s why. Large home events generally take place in the backyard. There’s more space and it’s generally a good way to preserve your home’s interior – not to mention your peace of mind! But keeping guests to the designated party zone is hard if the only toilet is inside. That’s where our old friend the portable toilet will be useful. By organising a few portable toilets outside, you can make sure that the inside of your home is still in one piece come the end of the night.

Big events are a great place to have a drink with friends – so keep a portable toilet close by!

Big events are normally fuelled by a wide variety of liquid refreshments. But what goes in must come out – normally sooner, rather than later. So it’s absolutely imperative that you’re prepared. Regardless of where your event is, you need toilets on hand. And you don’t want a big walk between your event and the loo. So why not bring the loo to you? With portable toilets for your event, you can add to the convenience factor and keep all the revellers happy. It mightn’t seem like a big thing, but its importance will quickly become apparent!

Large crowds and small toilets don’t mix: bring in some back-up with portable toilets at your event

The toilet queue: it’s one place we can safely say nobody wants to be. But too often, event goers across the country seem stuck in the long queue to the only toilet. And we think you deserve better! That’s why our advice is simple: get more toilets. With portable toilets, you can service your event’s toilet needs better than ever. You can place portable toilets strategically and discreetly so that the queues are minimal and the satisfaction immense.

If you’re running a big event, you’ll need council approval: that means portable toilets are a must!

Finally, there are the regulations. Big events normally need to be signed off by the local authority. And they can be pretty detailed in their scrutiny of your set up. If you don’t meet their standards, then your event probably won’t get off the ground. But there’s one way that you can impress them: portable toilets. The rules differ in different council areas, but there’s almost invariably a requirement for a certain number of toilets to match a certain number of attendees. It makes sense too – without the right amenities, even a well-planned event can fall apart. Luckily, the fix is easy – so get your portable toilets sorted today!

It’s always interesting to know the evolution of different technologies. The evolution of simple and complex technologies alike is always revealing – it gives us an insight into what life was like for earlier generations. And when it comes to insights, few are quite so candid as those offered by the evolution of the portable toilet. The humble portable toilet has come a long way since its conception. And, although we appreciate them to no end, reading about their evolution might make us appreciate them that little bit more!

The evolution of the portable toilet begins in the middle of last century, on the shipyards of WWII

Portable toilets began in the shipyards of World War Two. Here, sailors and dockers would spend long, hard hours on the move. And workplace amenities weren’t quite what they are now. So the maritime industry had to adapt. It was there, in the early twentieth century, that the portable toilet was born. It was a humble unit back then, made from timber and iron. It also had no effective method of waste storage or disposal. So, needless to say, experiences of the early portable toilet probably weren’t quite what they are now.

The next step in the evolution of the portable toilet was all about the chemicals!

With no way to control the smell or treat the waste, the evolution of the portable toilet had to move fast. Before long, someone had devised a way of treating the strong smell and bacteria of early portable toilets: chemicals. But these weren’t the sort of chemicals we use today. The first chemicals used to treat waste in portable toilets included some pretty harsh additions. Substances like formaldehyde were common in most chemical treatments, and the solution used became known for its distinctive blue colour.

By this point, portable toilets were still heavy – to continue their evolution, they had to get lighter

With a solid timber construction, calling these early toilets portable is a bit of a stretch. But then again, portability is relative, and they were at least more portable than the other toilets of the time. Still, though, early portable toilets had to get lighter if they were to live up to their name. And that is where the next step in the evolution of the portable toilet began. After considerable experimentation, the portable toilet engineers of their time decided that fibreglass would make a better compound for portable toilet units. And they were right, it was much lighter than the timber models, and therefore far more portable.

Safety became a concern in the evolution of the portable toilet: their chemical compound had to change

The thing about the evolution of the portable toilet is that it never ceased. And after a solid run, the chemical waste treatment was in the firing line once again. This time, the concern was safety. For those of you who aren’t familiar with formaldehyde, it is a very harsh chemical used to prevent decomposition. It was a favourite for early twentieth century morticians. Unsurprisingly, it was not a very safe chemical to handle. So after some careful thought, it was replaced with a safer and more effective chemical compound. That has been tweaked since then, and is still being tweaked to this day so that we can enjoy safe and hygienic portable toilet experiences.

As the evolution of the portable toilet continued, fibreglass became plastic and toilets mobilised!

Fibreglass was great inasmuch as it allowed portable toilets to be moved with ease. But there was one problem: it absorbed smell! So to make portable toilet experiences a little more luxurious, fibreglass gave way to plastic materials that were stronger, lighter, and thoroughly none-absorbent. Then came the kicker: portable toilet mobilised! With the addition of wheels and trailers, portable toilets become to dependable little fellas we see at job sites and events today.

Portable toilets: they’re the invisible driving force behind every site, event, and function. The give you somewhere to go so you can keep going! But it’s important to keep portable toilets going too. Sure, you portable toilet providers will come by and collect it before long. However, in the meantime, maintenance is on you.

Luckily, it’s nowhere near as hard or unpleasant as it sounds. Stuff like emptying the holding tank should only ever be done by the pros. All you need to do is tend to the little things before they get there. So have a read through our list and enjoy these simple ways to clean your portable toilet.

One of our best tips on how to clean a portable toilet is prevention: Keep cleaning tablets available!

We all know that prevention is better than a cure. But how does that apply to portable toilets? Well, there are several things you can do to keep your portable toilet as clean as possible. And one of these things is cleaning tablets. By dropping a cleaning tablet in the bowl every so often, you can reduce odours and create a slightly cleaner portable toilet for everyone. It’s that easy! However, you will need to check with your portable toilet provider first, to ensure that the tablets you choose are compatible with your portable toilet’s septic system.

If you keep your portable toilet clean and well stocked, it is less likely to end up in a bad way

Portable toilets are absolutely pivotal for events and they allow us to enjoy spaces that we otherwise would be able to. We reckon that’s worthy of some respect! And by respect, we mean keeping the portable toilet in a good way. It might seem elementary, but if you respect the portable toilet at your event and keep it well stocked, the people who use it are likely to do the same. This means your less likely to encounter some of those end-of-festival horror stories.

Portable toilets are tight spaces! Take some time each day to air out your portable toilet

Portable toilets are exactly that: portable! And to be portable, they have to be small, which means, of course, that they’re pretty confined inside. If you keep them closed day in day out for as long as you hire them, they can work up a bit of a, well, ‘stuffy’ smell. Luckily, this one is very easy to avoid. All you need to do is open it up a few times a day and let it air out. It really is as simple as that!

When you clean a portable toilet, focus on the areas that cop the most contact!

Cleaning portable toilets is a pretty quick process, being that they’re so small of course. And there’s one way to streamline it even further: focus on the touch points. By that, we mean those parts of the portable toilet that get touched the most – things like door handles, taps, toilet seats and so on. They harbour the most germs, and are also very easy to clean. All you need is a good disinfectant, some gloves, and some paper towel.

Finally, listen to the portable toilet pros! They will have some great advice on maintenance for you

When it comes to cleaning portable toilets, this guide is really just a point in the right direction. If you speak to the pros here at your portable toilet hire company, they will have some even better tips. They will also give you a rundown on how the portable toilet functions, and what you can do to keep it running smoothly.

Portable toilets: they occupy an important, but too often under recognised role in our society. Normally, portable toilets just fade into the background, whether they’re on a job site or at a music festival. But portable toilets have been around for a while. They began in a fascinating fashion as well: they were created in the early 20th century to reduce the time spent by dock workers, going to the toilet.

A lot has changed since then, and portable toilets have become an undeniable fixture of the world around us. So in celebration of this, we have put together a list of some of our favourite weird and wonderful portable toilet facts. Enjoy!

Preserving the environment with portable toilets – they use up to 90% less water than other toilets!

Depending on where you are, water consumption can be a pretty big issue. We have ourselves experienced the dry grip of drought – and we know that it leaves a lot to be desired. One big and very necessary water consumer is the toilet – there’s no avoiding it. And you might think portable toilets are the same. But that’s not the case. Portable toilets actually use as little as 10% of the water than a conventional toilet consumes. It makes you wonder what regular toilets need it all for!

Politics and portable toilets: there were 5,000 portable toilets at Obama’s inauguration

Over in the States, presidential inaugurations seem to be pretty controversial affairs. A particular source of controversy is the number of attendees. But we think there’s a far more pressing issue to be uncovered: the number of portable toilets! And the numbers might shock you. At former President Barack Obama’s inauguration, the American government organised for 5,000 portable toilets to be put in place. Needless to say, everyone was pretty well covered in the plumbing department.

Preserving the wrong kind of specimen: portable toilets used to use formaldehyde

You’ve probably encountered formaldehyde before, but hopefully not too closely! Formaldehyde is the fluid that was previously used to embalm corpses, and is currently used by scientists to preserve natural specimens. If you’ve ever seen small animals stuffed in jars at the museum, chances are that was formaldehyde. But it’s also a carcinogen, which means it causes cancer. So you’ll be pleased to know that the practice of using formaldehyde in portable toilets ended long ago. Sure, it was pretty good at killing bacteria and masking odours. But we like to think our modern systems are a little more environmentally friendly!

According to some research, the first in a line of portable toilets is the least used

Humans have grappled with some pretty big questions over the years. And one of the biggest is which public toilet to use. If you are entering day three of an outdoor music festival and it’s time to hit the loo, you are going to want to one that is least used. We would go so far as to say you will need the one that is least used. So do you go to the one at the end of the row? Or maybe the middle? You would be forgiven for thinking that, because the evidence seems to suggest everyone thinks the same way. And that means the first toilet in the row is normally the least used. At least until people realise that’s the case!

Portable toilets have come a long way, from timber boxes at a shipyard, to luxury events models

From their first appearance as little wooden boxes in the shipyards, portable toilets have never stopped innovating. And today, they have almost one hundred years of portable toilet technology behind them. That means they are basically unlimited in their designs. One that has caught our eye is the luxury portable toilet. Luxury portable toilets have truly thrown off the rugged nature of their heritage, with marble bench tops, tiled floors, and beautiful fittings. We are yet to encounter them in person, but they’re out there and hope springs eternal!
